Higher education system

The Finnish higher education system is comprised of two parallel sectors: universities and universities of applied sciences (also known as polytechnics). They complement one another through their own strengths and profiles. The universities emphasise scientific research and education based thereon. The universities of applied sciences, or polytechnics, provide high-quality education based on  expertise in working life and its development.

Studies at universities of applied sciences are designed to respond, in a more practical fashion than university studies, to the changing educational needs of the field. In addition to their educational programmes, the universities of applied sciences carry out research and development work that serves to support both teaching and working life.
